Childbirth 101

Caroline and I attended our the first session of our childbirth class last night. This was great because we really did not know what to expect during childbirth (aside from the pain of course!). It was also recommended to us by friends, family, and even our ob-gyn.

So there we were, seated on the floor of the classroom with our pillows and our blankets, beside other couples in various stages of pregnancy. The moms (Caroline included) looked a little tense and anxious as our teacher described and showed us (via presentation materials) the various stages of labour. I have to admit though, that until now, I am not sure how it is physically possible for our baby to fit through and come out through you-know-what!

Fortunately, the class isn't all 'horror'. The main objective of childbirth class is to make sure that parents-to-be are well informed of the whole process so that the fear and the tension will be eased. The more relaxed mommy is, the less painful childbirth will be. So the moms practiced breathing techniques (and kegels!!!) and were taught various positions on how to ease any discomfort in their lower backs, etc. The dads weren't just bystanders; we participated too. Our job was to ensure that the moms were relaxed by massaging and applying gentle pressure to prepare her body for labor.

All in all, it was an enlightening and intimate experience. Very informative for first-time parents!

La Vita e Bella!
